FATALITY! : Mortal Kombat X Review

As one of the first action games to have released in the past three years, Mortal Kombat X has definitely been one of the most awaited games of the year.
But does it shine and prove to be a worthy sequel to Mortal Kombat (2011)? Let us find out.
Mortal Kombat X
Developer: NetherRealm Studios
Platforms: PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One,Android, Microsoft Windows, iOS
PeGi rating: 18
There are a lot of things one would expect from a next gen fighting game – good graphics, updated fighting mechanism, a large roster of characters, a variety of modes and tonnes of gore – Mortal Kombat X has it all.
As a sequel to MK, MKX has a surprisingly interesting story, with great voice acting that manages to keep you entertained between duels. After all, that’s what one buys MKX for - the fights. The fighting mechanism is top notch and definitely better than that of MK, though at times the moves feel choppy and forced. But that won’t bother you as the great attack animations and their exhausting variety, complemented with satisfying sound effects and an original soundtrack keep you hooked.
However, what happens after the story mode? Fret not because outside the story mode too, there is a lot going on. Test your luck (a personal favourite), faction wars, king of the hill and other online features are very entertaining. Though an occasional lag is enough to completely spoil your online matches, leading to the inevitable rage quit. There are tower challenges that are updated on a regular bases (hourly, daily or weekly) and ensure that you never get bored. There is also a mode involving crypts that puts the player into a first person treasure hunt and makes you search for crypts and caves.
The visuals too are great and everything, right from the characters to the environment, is very well detailed. This game is definitely not for the queasy as it is high on gore content. The fatalities return, and they’re not for the weak-hearted. Heads getting sliced, bodies getting ripped apart, selfies taken with a jawless face - the gore is way too high.
Speaking about variety, the game has a sufficiently large roster with four new characters. The best part is that each character has three variations in battle, each with different physical attributes and unique special moves.
Verdict
With the best graphics in the series, awesome moves and tonnes of gore, MKX is definitely the best Mortal Kombat game ever made.
Final score: 9.2/10
